Expert Transfer Case & 4WD / AWD System Repair in Hyderabad
NVG, BorgWarner, Magna & ATC transfer case rebuild · 4MATIC · xDrive · quattro · Terrain Response
Metre Per Second is Hyderabad's specialist workshop for transfer case and 4WD / AWD system repair. We rebuild and repair the most common transfer case families found on Indian SUVs and luxury 4x4s — BorgWarner 4411 / 4416 (Fortuner, Hilux, Endeavour, Pajero), New Venture Gear NVG-243/246 (Wrangler, Grand Cherokee), Magna MP3023 / MP1226 (Range Rover, Discovery, BMW xDrive), and ATC-300 / ATC-400 (Mercedes 4MATIC). Common failures we fix every week: 4H/4L shift motor (encoder motor) failure, viscous coupling seizure, chain stretch, mainshaft and planetary wear, oil pump failure, fluid contamination, control module faults, and "Service 4WD" or "AWD Inactive" warnings on the cluster. Our technicians are trained on factory ODIS, ISTA, Star Diagnosis and TechStream so we can read encoder motor positions, run actuator tests, and reprogram transfer case control modules (TCCM) after repair. We disassemble the transfer case in our clean room, inspect every gear and bearing, replace seals, chains and clutch packs to OEM spec, and refill with the correct fluid (Toyota TF-2, Mopar 80930, BMW ATF M-1375.4, Mercedes 236.25, Land Rover Tay-LR2 etc.) — never a generic ATF. Most rebuilds are completed in 4-6 working days at 40-55% less than authorised dealer cost, with a 1-year / 20,000 km warranty.
Common Transfer Case & 4WD Problems We Fix
Encoder Motor / Shift Motor Failure
Electric shift motor on the back of the transfer case fails to engage 4H or 4L
Symptoms:
- "Service 4WD" message on dash
- 4WD light flashing
- Cannot shift into 4H/4L
- Grinding noise from transfer case when shifting
Solution: Encoder motor and position sensor replacement, TCCM relearn via factory scan tool, gear position calibration
Viscous Coupling / Centre Differential Seizure
AWD system locks up causing tyre scrub on tight turns and driveline windup
Symptoms:
- Crow-hop on tight turns in dry parking lots
- Front tyre scrub and unusual wear
- Vibration above 80 km/h
- AWD warning light
Solution: Viscous coupling or centre differential rebuild with new clutch packs, OEM-spec fluid refill, road test verification
Chain Stretch & Mainshaft Wear
Internal chain stretches and mainshaft splines wear causing rattle and slip
Symptoms:
- Rattle from under car at low speed
- Driveline lash on throttle on/off
- Metal flakes on transfer case fluid magnet
Solution: Complete transfer case rebuild — new chain, mainshaft, planetary gears, bearings and seals using genuine OEM kit
Transfer Case Fluid Leak
Output shaft seals or rear cover gasket leak causing low fluid and bearing damage
Symptoms:
- Oil drips behind front diff or under transfer case
- Whining noise that worsens with speed
- Fluid level low on dipstick / inspection plug
Solution: Output shaft seal, input seal and cover gasket replacement, fluid top-up with correct OEM specification fluid
Our Diagnostic & Repair Process
- Scan & Live Data: Read TCCM, ABS and engine modules for stored codes; capture live encoder motor position and clutch duty cycle
- Mode Engagement Test: Cycle 2H, 4H, AWD-Auto, 4L on a 4-post lift to confirm electric shift motor and synchroniser operation
- Fluid Inspection: Drain transfer case fluid, inspect colour, smell and metal content on the fill plug magnet
- Actuator & Solenoid Test: Bi-directional actuator commands via ODIS / ISTA / TechStream to confirm shift motor and clutch pack operation
- Driveline Inspection: Front prop shaft, rear prop shaft, U-joints, CV joints and centre support bearing inspection for related driveline noise

Frequently Asked Questions — Transfer Case & 4WD in Hyderabad
Why is my "Service 4WD" warning light on?
The most common cause is a failed encoder / shift motor on the back of the transfer case. We test it with a factory scan tool and either reprogram or replace the motor. Other causes include TCCM faults, low fluid level, or a failed front axle disconnect actuator.
Can you rebuild a Fortuner / Endeavour transfer case?
Yes. We rebuild the BorgWarner 4411 / 4416 transfer case used on Fortuner, Hilux, Endeavour, Pajero Sport and similar SUVs. Typical rebuild includes new chain, planetary gears, bearings, seals and Toyota TF-2 fluid, completed in 4-5 days.
Do you service Mercedes 4MATIC and BMW xDrive?
Yes. Both Mercedes ATC-300 / ATC-400 (4MATIC) and BMW ATC-300/350/450 (xDrive) transfer cases are serviced regularly. We use Star Diagnosis and ISTA to commission the unit after repair.
How often should transfer case fluid be changed?
Most manufacturers recommend a transfer case fluid change every 60,000 km, or every 30,000 km if you regularly use 4WD or drive in heavy traffic. Land Rover and Mercedes intervals are typically 80,000 km.
Customer Reviews — Transfer Case & 4WD System Repair in Hyderabad
"Service 4WD" light came on and 4H stopped working. Toyota dealer quoted ₹85,000 for a full transfer case replacement. Metre Per Second diagnosed it as just the encoder motor, replaced it in a day for ₹18,500 and relearned the TCCM. 4WD works perfectly. Honest workshop.
Transfer case rattle and Terrain Response error on my Range Rover. MPS used Pathfinder to diagnose, rebuilt the Magna MP3023 transfer case with genuine LR parts and Tay-LR2 fluid in 5 days. Saved over ₹2 lakh vs the LR dealer quote.
NVG-241 transfer case was popping out of 4-Lo on rocks. Metre Per Second rebuilt the t-case with new chain and bearings, and re-shimmed the shift forks. No more pop-out, smooth shifts. Only workshop in Hyderabad I trust for my Wrangler.
Crow-hop on parking lot turns and 4MATIC warning. MPS ran Star Diagnosis, found centre diff clutch pack worn out, rebuilt it with genuine MB parts and 236.25 fluid. Drives perfectly straight now. Premium service at sensible price.
