Hyundai AMT automated manual transmission: diagnosis before replacement
Hyundai AMT, iMT, DCT and torque-converter transmissions do not use the same repair procedure. Confirm which transmission is fitted before interpreting a shifting complaint or ordering components. For a vehicle with AMT, check how the clutch and gear-selection actuators respond to commands and whether the position feedback agrees with the selected gear. Cold-start hesitation, repeated neutral selection and poor engagement after warming up can require different tests; a warning light alone does not establish that the complete gearbox has failed.
Establish the electrical baseline
Check battery condition, charging voltage, relevant fuses, grounds and connectors before condemning an actuator or controller. Save fault codes and freeze-frame information before clearing them. A low-voltage event can interrupt engagement or learning, but stored codes still need to be investigated rather than dismissed as a battery issue.
Measure clutch and actuator behaviour
Compare commanded and actual gear or clutch positions using a diagnostic tool compatible with the fitted system. Inspect mechanical linkage, mounting and clutch operation as appropriate. Wear, binding, an actuator fault and incorrect learned values can produce similar symptoms; identify the cause before recommending replacement parts.
Repair, learn and verify
Agree the repair scope and estimate with the customer first. Carry out the specified clutch or gear learning procedure only when its prerequisites are met; calibration cannot repair a worn clutch or damaged mechanism. After repair, verify forward and reverse engagement, stop-start behaviour and the original complaint under safe road-test conditions.
