- Compressor clutch
- The electromagnetic coupling on the nose of the AC compressor that engages the pulley to the shaft when cooling is demanded. As the friction plate wears, its air gap grows past specification and the clutch starts slipping or refusing to engage while the compressor itself is fine. On many cars the clutch, coil and bearing can be replaced separately, which is a fraction of the cost of a complete compressor.
- Evaporator
- The heat exchanger buried in the dashboard where liquid refrigerant boils off and absorbs heat from the cabin air blown across it. It is the hardest AC part to reach — most cars need the entire dashboard out — and the most common source of the musty smell, because condensate plus dust breeds mould on its fins. Evaporator pinhole leaks are also the classic cause of gas that vanishes every few months with no visible leak under the bonnet.
- Expansion valve (TXV)
- The metering device that drops high-pressure liquid refrigerant into a low-pressure spray as it enters the evaporator, controlling flow against evaporator outlet temperature. A valve stuck closed starves the evaporator and the AC blows warm; stuck open, it floods it and risks slugging liquid back to the compressor. - The low-global-warming refrigerant fitted to newer cars in place of R134a, with different oil requirements and its own recovery equipment. The two gases must never be mixed, and a shop without a dedicated R1234yf station will contaminate the system or simply refuse the job.
